A wealthy man with a frightening blue beard seeks a wife from a family of beautiful sisters. Despite his riches, the women are initially frightened by his appearance and past. The youngest daughter agrees to marry him after he charms her during a week-long visit at his country estate. Soon after their wedding, Blue Beard departs on a long journey, leaving his new wife in charge of his magnificent home. He gives her all the keys to his treasures but strictly forbids her from entering one specific closet. Overcome by intense curiosity, she disobeys him and unlocks the forbidden door. Inside, she discovers a horrifying scene that reveals his dark secret. Terrified, she tries to clean a small key that has become stained with blood, but it remains permanently marked. When Blue Beard returns, he notices the stain on her trembling hand and realizes what she has done. He cruelly sentences her to death for her disobedience. The terrified wife asks for a moment to pray and secretly urges her sister Anne to watch for her brothers' arrival. Her anxious sister repeatedly checks the horizon while Blue Beard grows impatient. Just as he is about to strike, her brothers arrive and rescue her from his clutches. They defeat Blue Beard and save her life. With her husband gone, she inherits all his wealth and uses it wisely. She helps her family and eventually marries a kind man who brings her happiness.
