Cinderella, Or The Little Glass Slipper

by Andrew Lang

Cinderella lives a hard life with her proud stepmother and two jealous stepsisters, who force her to do all the dirty work around the house. One day, an invitation arrives for a royal ball, but Cinderella is left behind to help her sisters get ready. While she cries, her kind godmother appears and uses magic to transform a pumpkin into a carriage and mice into horses. She also turns Cinderella’s rags into beautiful clothes and gives her a pair of glass slippers, warning her to return before midnight. At the ball, the King’s son is captivated by Cinderella’s beauty and dances with her all night. When the clock strikes twelve, she flees in haste, leaving behind one of her glass slippers. The prince searches for the mysterious girl who fits the slipper, visiting many houses but finding no match. Eventually, the search reaches Cinderella’s home, where her stepsisters fail to fit their feet into the delicate shoe. Cinderella then tries on the slipper, and it fits perfectly, revealing her identity as the princess from the ball. Her godmother returns to restore her beautiful gown, and she is reunited with the grateful prince. The story ends happily as Cinderella marries the King’s son and forgives her unkind stepsisters.

He had likewise, by another wife, a young daughter, but of unparalleled goodness and sweetness of temper, which she took from her mother, who was the best creature in the world. No sooner were the ceremonies of the wedding over but the mother-in-law began to show herself in her true colors. She could not bear the good qualities of this pretty girl, and the less because they made her own daughters appear…
