Fifth Voyage

by Andrew Lang

The narrator, a merchant named Sindbad, sets sail on his fifth voyage with a ship of his own, inviting fellow merchants to join him. They explore an uninhabited island where they foolishly kill a young roc inside its egg. The parent rocs return and destroy their ship by dropping massive stones upon it, leaving the narrator to wash ashore alone on a strange land. There, he discovers a beautiful garden but encounters a terrifying old man who forces him to carry around all day while gathering fruit. The merchant endures this exhausting ordeal until he creates strong wine from grapes, which intoxicates the monster and allows him to escape. He is rescued by mariners who warn him about the Old Man of the Sea before taking him to a prosperous town. There, he learns to collect coconuts by throwing stones at monkeys, who drop the nuts in retaliation. After earning enough money, he trades his coconuts for pepper and aloes wood on other islands. He also enjoys great success diving for large, perfect pearls with other merchants. Finally, he returns home to Bagdad with immense wealth and shares his fortune with the poor. The story concludes with him resting in comfort after a life of daring adventures.

We set sail with the first favourable wind, and after a long voyage upon the open seas we landed upon an unknown island which proved to…
