First Voyage

by Andrew Lang

Sindbad is a young merchant who decides to turn his life around by setting sail on the sea to trade for wealth. He joins a group of merchants and embarks on a journey that takes them near strange and mysterious islands. During a stop, the crew lands on what appears to be a peaceful island to rest and eat. Suddenly, the ground shakes violently as they realize it is actually the back of a giant sleeping whale. The creature plunges into the ocean, leaving Sindbad stranded and alone on a piece of drifting wood. After a frightening night at sea, he washes up on a real island where he meets friendly grooms serving their king. He is brought to the capital and receives warm hospitality from King Mihrage while waiting for a ship home. Eventually, Sindbad encounters a ship owned by his former captain, who believes him to be dead. The captain is amazed when Sindbad reveals himself and claims his own recovered merchandise as proof. The honest captain returns all of Sindbad's goods without asking for anything in return. Grateful for this kindness, Sindbad trades his cargo for valuable spices and riches on the homeward journey. He arrives back home with a fortune, rebuilding his life with joy and peace. Sindbad shares this tale with a porter named Hindbad, who is deeply moved by his generosity and success. The story ends with Sindbad preparing to tell yet another adventure to his grateful audience.

I sold all my household goods by public auction, and joined a company of merchants who traded by sea, embarking with them at Balsora in a ship which we had fitted out between us. We set sail and took our course towards the East Indies…
