The Snow Queen

by H C Andersen

A wicked sprite creates a magical mirror that distorts all beauty and goodness, eventually shattering into splinters that spread misfortune across the world. Two children, Kay and Gerda, live next door to each other and share a close bond in their small garden. When a shard of the evil mirror lands in Kay's eye and heart, he becomes cold and cruel. He escapes with the Snow Queen to her icy palace, leaving Gerda heartbroken and determined to find him. Gerda sets out on a long journey to rescue her friend from the frozen north. Along the way, she encounters various helpers who guide her toward her goal. She meets a robber maiden who initially threatens her but later offers support. Gerda also travels with a reindeer and visits wise women in distant lands who provide advice for her quest. Despite the harsh cold and difficult terrain, Gerda remains steadfast in her love for Kay. Eventually, she finds Kay in the Snow Queen's hall, where he is indifferent to everything around him. Her warm tears melt the ice splinters from his eyes and heart, restoring his true self. They leave the palace together, accompanied by animals who help them travel home. The pair returns to their hometown, growing up while retaining their childlike innocence. Their grandmother reads a story that helps them understand the power of love and faith. The tale concludes with the two friends sitting together in the sun, happy and whole once more.

One day he was in a very good humor, for he had made a mirror with the power of causing all that was good and beautiful when it was reflected therein, to look poor and mean; but that which was good-for-nothing and looked ugly was shown magnified and increased in ugliness. In this mirror the most beautiful landscapes looked like boiled spinach, and the best persons were turned…
