The Story Of The Three Little Pigs

by Joseph Jacobs

An old sow sends her three little pigs out into the world to seek their fortunes. The first little pig builds a fragile house of straw, while the second chooses furze for his home. A hungry wolf soon arrives at both houses and blows them down with ease. He manages to eat up the two careless pigs in this dangerous way. The third little pig works hard to build a sturdy house made of bricks instead. When the wolf visits, he huffs and puffs but cannot blow the brick house down. Frustrated, the wolf tries to trick the little pig into leaving his safe shelter. He invites the pig to a turnip field early in the morning to outsmart him. The clever little pig rises before dawn and returns home before the wolf arrives. Next, the wolf lies about an apple tree to catch the pig off guard. Again, the pig is faster and escapes by throwing apples to distract him. The third trick involves a trip to the fair, where the pig hides in a butter-churn. He rolls down a hill, frightening the wolf so much that he retreats home. Enraged, the wolf decides to climb down the chimney to catch the pig at last. The little pig anticipates this move and boils a pot of water over a fire. The wolf falls into the pot and is cooked for supper by the brave pig. The little pig then lives happily ever after in his safe brick house.

The first that went off met a man with a bundle of straw, and said to him: "Please, man, give me that straw to build me a house." Which the man did, and the little pig built a house with it. Presently came along a wolf, and knocked at the door, and said: "Little pig, little pig, let me come in." To which the pig answered: "No…
