Momotaro, Or The Story Of The Son Of A Peach

by Yei Theodora Ozaki

An elderly couple living in humble circumstances discovers a magical peach floating down their river, which splits open to reveal a strong and brave boy named Momotaro. As he grows into a courageous young man, Momotaro learns that wicked horned demons are terrorizing his homeland by stealing from the people. Determined to restore peace, he sets out on a journey to the devils' island stronghold to defeat them. Along the way, he encounters a hungry dog who joins him after being offered a rice cake. Next, a mischievous monkey appears and is invited to join the expedition with another piece of food. A fierce pheasant also enters their group, leading to initial quarrels among the three new companions. Momotaro wisely commands them to put aside their differences and unite for the common cause. When they reach the sea, the animals are initially daunted by the water, but Momotaro encourages them not to give up. They board a ship and sail bravely across the waves until they sight the demon island. The pheasant flies ahead to taunt the devils, drawing their fire while Momotaro finds a secret entrance into the castle. He encounters two captured maidens who guide him past the defenses to confront the enemy directly. The battle is fierce, with Momotaro and his animal friends fighting together against the powerful horned demons. After a long struggle, the devils are defeated, and their chief surrenders in submission. Momotaro rescues the captive maidens and gathers the stolen treasure from the demon stronghold. He returns home as a celebrated hero, bringing peace and prosperity to his village and his loving adoptive parents.
